GSIC President’s Eid Al-Fitr Speech Emphasizes Unity, Tolerance, and Good Neighborliness

On the joyous occasion of Eid Al-Fitr (Koriteh), which signifies the end of Ramadan, the President of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC), Sheikh Essa Foday Darboe, delivered an impactful speech at the State House of The Gambia. The speech was delivered during a traditional meeting that brought together Banjul Muslim Elders and the President of the Republic of The Gambia, Adama Barrow.

In a powerful address that resonated with unity, tolerance, and mutual respect, Sheikh Essa Foday Darboe articulated three fundamental points that underscored the importance of cohesion within Gambian society.

1. Strengthening of Family Ties: Sheikh Darboe highlighted the intricate web of familial connections that exist within Gambian communities. He emphasized that intermarriage among different ethnic groups exemplifies how interconnected Gambians are. The Sheikh called for the nurturing of family bonds, irrespective of ethnic or tribal differences, and cautioned against the divisive tendencies of family and ethnic segregation. He urged Gambians to embrace unity, respect, and harmony within the larger family of the nation.

2. Strengthening of Religious Ties: The President of GSIC stressed the significance of tolerance and peaceful coexistence among Muslims and individuals of other faiths. He highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, the Christian Council, and the Ministry responsible for religious affairs in fostering dialogue and understanding. Sheikh Darboe assured that the Muslim community in The Gambia is committed to religious tolerance and is actively engaged in maintaining harmonious relations. He cautioned against any actions that might instigate religious tension and urged the public to refrain from causing divisions based on religion. The Sheikh also noted the nation’s progress in Quranic Studies and emphasized the importance of maintaining that status for continuous advancement.

3. “Gambian Ya” – Strengthening of Good Neighborliness: Sheikh Essa Foday Darboe passionately asserted that all Gambians are neighbors by virtue of sharing the same country. He called upon every citizen to actively enhance good neighborliness, emphasizing that it is a fundamental obligation rooted in Islamic teachings. The Sheikh warned against undermining this core principle and equated doing so with disobedience to Allah’s commandment.

In concluding his poignant speech, Sheikh Darboe urged all Gambians to unite in support of the government’s efforts to strengthen good neighborliness, underlining that this shared responsibility contributes to the well-being and progress of the nation.

The President’s speech resonated deeply with the audience and reflected the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council’s commitment to promoting unity, tolerance, and the betterment of society.
