VP Jallow Presides over GSIC’s Launch of the Specialized Committees & Congress of Advisory Council

Kanifing, The Gambia – May 28, 2023 – Today, the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC) held a historic event at their premises in Kanifing, MDI Road, graced by the presence of Vice President H.E. Muhammed B.S. Jallow. The occasion marked the official launch of the specialized committees, which are dedicated to strengthening unity within the Country most especially within the Muslim community and serving their specific needs.

The participation of Vice President H.E. Muhammed B.S. Jallow as the presiding official highlighted the significance of the event as it demonstrated the Gambia Government’s commitment to religious inclusivity and their recognition of the vital role played by the GSIC in promoting unity and harmony among the citizenry.

In attendance were the GSIC Regional and District Chairmen from across The Gambia. Their attendance demonstrates their commitment to fostering unity and promoting the welfare of Muslims in their respective areas. By gathering these influential leaders, the GSIC aims to strengthen collaboration and ensure representation from diverse regions within the country.

Additionally, the event saw the participation of the esteemed members of the Shura Council, an advisory body consisting of scholars and respected individuals within the Muslim Community. Their presence added further credibility to the proceedings, highlighting the importance and relevance of the specialized committees’ work.

The GSIC launched several specialized committees during this momentous event. These committees are dedicated to addressing crucial aspects of the Muslim community’s development and empowerment. The Specialized Committees are:

  1. Da’wah & Mentorship Committee: Focuses on spreading Islamic teachings and providing guidance and support to community members.
  2. Fatwa & Moon-sighting Committee: Responsible for issuing religious rulings and providing guidance to Muslims on issues of the Moonsighting as well Prayer times.
  3. Higher Education Committee: Committed to advancing educational opportunities and promoting academic excellence among Muslim higher learning institutions.
  4. Mosques & Scientific Sessions Committee: Dedicated to the management and support of mosques and organizing educational and awareness sessions.
  5. Women & Social Welfare Committee: Addressing the needs and concerns of women within the Islamic community and promoting their well-being.
  6. Media & Communications Committee: Tasked with effectively disseminating accurate information and improving communication channels of the GSIC to better serve Muslims.
  7. Culture & Islamic Heritage Committee: Focused on preserving and promoting the rich Islamic cultural heritage within the community.
  8. Finance Committee: Overseeing financial matters related to the GSIC, including sub-committees such as Donations & Gifts, Waqf & Endowment, and Zakat & Charity Works.

The launch of these specialized committees represents a significant step towards achieving the GSIC’s objectives of unity and service to (particularly) the Muslim community. Through the collaborative efforts of these committees, the GSIC aims to enhance the well-being and upliftment of Muslims in the Gambia, addressing their needs and concerns.

The event provided an opportunity for the attendees to witness the unveiling of the committees’ action plans. The GSIC Regional and District Chairpersons, along with the Shura Council members, eagerly awaited the presentation of strategic initiatives and programs that will strengthen unity within the Muslim community and address pressing issues faced by Muslims across The Gambia.

The GSIC recognizes the invaluable contributions and insights of these key stakeholders in shaping the direction of the specialized committees’ work. Their participation and support will play a vital role in driving positive change and promoting the overall well-being of Muslims in the country.

As the specialized committees commence their endeavours, guided by the wisdom and input of the General Advisory Council, the GSIC remains steadfast in its commitment to serving the Muslim community. Through collaboration and inclusive decision-making, the GSIC aims to foster a stronger and more united Muslim Community in The Gambia.
