GSIC and Concerned Citizens (CC) Host ‘Imam’s Conference: Against Secularism’ to Address National Identity and Religious Values
In a joint effort to address matters of religious significance and national identity, the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC) joined the efforts of Concerned Citizens (CC) to organize an ‘Imam’s Conference: Against Secularism in The Gambia.’ The conference, held at QCity in Bijilo, brought together religious leaders, scholars, and concerned citizens to discuss the implications of secularism on the country’s religious values.
Against the backdrop of ongoing debates about the nature of the state’s relationship with religion, the conference aimed to provide a platform for open discussions and informed dialogue about the role of Islam in shaping the nation’s identity. Attendees engaged in conversations about the potential impact of secularism on religious practices, education, and community cohesion.
Speakers at the conference included religious scholars, legal experts, and community leaders who shared their insights on the significance of Islam in Gambian society and the importance of preserving the country’s religious values. The event emphasized the council’s stance that The Gambia is a nation founded on religious principles, and the GSIC is committed to promoting the recognition of Islam’s role in the nation’s identity.
The leadership of the GSIC underscored the importance of preserving Islamic values and teachings in the country’s governance framework. He expressed concerns that secularism might challenge the religious identity that has been an integral part of Gambian culture for generations.
Members of Concerned Citizens echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the conference aimed to raise awareness about the potential consequences of secularism and to encourage informed conversations about the role of religion in society. They highlighted the need for unity among religious communities to protect the country’s religious heritage while respecting the rights of all citizens.
The conference featured panel discussions, workshops, and interactive sessions where participants had the opportunity to voice their opinions, ask questions, and share their perspectives. Attendees also discussed strategies for engaging with the government and advocating for a constitutional framework that recognizes and respects the nation’s religious diversity.
As the ‘Imam’s Conference: Against Secularism in The Gambia’ concluded, participants expressed their appreciation for the platform provided by the GSIC and Concerned Citizens to engage in constructive dialogue. The event’s outcomes are expected to contribute to ongoing conversations about the nation’s identity and the role of religion in its development while fostering unity and understanding among religious communities.
